I recently attended the pre-Darmstadt meeting of the Composer-Performer course with excellent mentors Jennifer Walshe and David Helbich at this incredible place - PAF (Performing Arts Forum) in St. Erme, France. We're working with examining process, fluctuating between the roles of composer/performer and integrating extra-musical elements in sound-based work. The course will continue at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music coming up in July/August, and culminate in a gallery performance.

I was also in Toronto for a first reading and workshop of a new work for choir and soloists by Emilie LeBel, written for Jumblies Theatre's Ground Floor Choir. I am honoured to be one of the four soloists along with Alex Samaras, Maryem Tollar and Hussein Janmohammed, with Ruth Howard at the helm, Shifra Cooper conducting and Britta Johnson on piano. The project is realized through a partnership with Soundstreams - you can read more about the project here

One more show coming up very soon with Altra Voce - April 8 at Espace Cercle Carré, with Jeffrey Stonehouse on flute and James O'Callaghan on electronics. Works by James O'Callaghan, Charles Quevillon (création!), Luke Nickel, Luciano Berio, Kate Soper, Nicole Lizée, Beat Furrer and a new version of one of my solo voice pieces.

"Aria for a soubrette" by VOICE POLICE @ Café Concret

Ruby Kato Attwood and I had a blast presenting some of our work-in-progress Mozartian sci-fi audio puppetry at the 23rd Café Concret / Festival OUF Off Casteliers. It was a wild night of puppetry, experimental theatre and performing object cabaret held in the cozy and adorable Pavillon du Parc St-Viateur - a chalet in the middle of a skating rink.

Benefit Concert at St. Matthias Feb 19th / TURF project creation residencies underway

posted 10 Feb 2016, 21:45 by Sarah Albu   [ updated 10 Feb 2016, 21:49 ]

Our research and creation residencies for the turf project (gallery concert of co-composed and commissioned performative works for voice + electronics) are in full swing! I've been working over the past few months with composers Philippe Battikha, Nicolas Hyatt and Patrick Saint-Denis (Montreal) and Rita Ueda (Vancouver) to develop ideas and images related to landscape. Ruby Kato Attwood is doing the visual/stage/lightning design and consultation and Codes D'Accès is presenting the project in April in Montreal. Check back soon for more updates! In the meantime, here is a little clip of some preliminary tests with Patrick Saint-Denis' interface:

I've also got a concert coming up very soon, a benefit for St. Matthias Anglican Church's Refugee Support Fund. I sing in the choir at St. Matthias every week and am looking forward to sharing some of my favourite music for solo voice and small vocal ensemble - I'll be joined by the ladies of ensemble ina for a second set. Featuring a première from my dear friend and collaborator Isaiah Ceccarelli as well as music and arrangements by Giacinto Scelsi, Henri Pousseur, John Cage, Aura Giles, Marie-Clare Saindon, Rita Ueda, Amelia McMahon, Joan Baez and more.

A busy start to 2016: New vocal trio + CNMN/RCMN FORUM

posted 19 Jan 2016, 08:29 by Sarah Albu   [ updated 19 Jan 2016, 08:31 ]

My new and yet-unnamed vocal trio with the fabulous Gabriel Dharmoo and Elizabeth Lima had our first concert at Espace Cercle Carré on January 12th, featuring old and new tidbits filled with theatricality, curious sounds and general silliness.

Hoping to do another one soon! Videos coming soon!

Ruby Kato Attwood and I recently gave a performative talk/dialogue during the Canadian New Music Network / Réseau canadienne pour les musiques nouvelles biannual FORUM in Ottawa from Jan 14-17. It was great to connect/re-connect with friends and colleagues from across Canada and Europe.
